Abstract

The problem of entropy of radiation was first treated by Max Planck in the years 1895 – 1900. He considered himself as a disciple of Clausius, the founder of thermodynamics, the man who had introduced the concept of entropy into physics. Planck’s aim, when he began his research of black body radiation, was to establish an expression for the entropy of this radiation. He was convinced, when he began this work, that thermodynamics, combined with Maxwell’s theory of electromagnetism, would give the answer to his question.
