Production of Extracellular Matrix by Notochord and by Spinal Cord

The evident role which notochord and spinal cord play in evoking somitic condrogenesis in vivo, and the accumulating evidence that normal constituents of the extracellular matrix of cartilage (chondroitin sulphate, collagen, hyaluronate) could influence the rate of synthesis of cartilage extracellular matrix by feedback inhibition and stimulation (Hall, 1973), lead to a search for the existence of extracellular matrices around the notochord and spinal cord. The first studies bearing on this problem utilized histochemical and autoradiographic techniques to show that glycosaminoglycans could be visualised around the notochord at the time when chondrogenesis was commencing within the adjacent sclerotome.
