The production of glycosaminoglycans, especially chondroitin sulphate, is characteristic of functioning chondroblasts and chondrocytes. The onset of such synthesis, as detected by 35 S autoradiography, has been used as a means of detecting the initial appearance of cells determined for chondrogenesis.
