Is the differentiation of the cartilaginous primordia of the vertebrae an example of self differentiation of the somitic mesoderm or is it dependent upon influences emanating from the adjacent tissues — the notochord, spinal cord, spinal ganglia, spinal nerves, epidermal ectoderm and endoderm? The answer to this question has not remained the same over the course of experimentation of somitic mesoderm and this system is an excellent example of the way in which the current experimental method influences interpretation of developmental processes. Before reviewing the history of this question in detail it will be useful to briefly outline the highlights of the story.
