In tracing the origin of the vertebrae it is appropriate to begin with the development, segmentation and sequential subdivision of the paraxial mesoderm into pre-somitic mesoderm, pairs of somites, and sclerotome, dermatome and myotome. Williams (1910) provided the first comprehensive account of formation and segmentation; of the somites (in the embryonic chick) and recently Lipton and Jacobson (1974a) have provided an elegant account of these early stages.
