Blockade of Carotid Body Chemosensory Inhibition

Chemoreception in the Carotid Body

Abstract

There is a high content of dopamine in the carotid body (21), located in glomus type I cells by fluorescence microscopy (9). Intrastream injections of dopamine produced a transient depression of the frequency of chemosensory discharges in cat carotid bodies superfused in vitro (19). This effect was attributed to direct inhibition, since no vasomotor changes could be induced in this preparation. Furthermore, the action seems to be specific for this chemoreceptor organ, since dopamine applied to carotid sinus preparations produced only a weak and long-lasting increase in the frequency of barosensory discharges (19).
