Pharmacology and Classification of LSD-like Hallucinogens

  • Chapter

Abstract

Hallucinogens of the LSD-type have been used since antiquity (Schultes, 1969, 1970a, b). Peyote and mushrooms containing psilocin (Heim and Wasson, 1958; Wasson, 1959) were used by Indians of the southwestern United States and Central America in religious rites. Lewin (1964) and others conducted experiments with peyote buttons and mescaline at the turn of this century and described their major subjective effects including visual and auditory perceptual changes, some autonomic changes such as perspiration and shivering as well as elevation of mood, which Lewin described as follows: “The individual is usually in a state of extremely good humor and full of feelings of intellectual and physical energy.”
