Abstract

Despite intensive investigation, the mechanisms of antigen stimulation remain poorly understood. Recent studies on the mitogenic stimulation of lymphocytes by lectins (1, 2), antibodies (3, 4), or hormones (5) as well as by antigens (6, 7) have begun to shed light on the function of the cell surface in antigenic response. The plasma membrane appears to be the cellular site that controls whether a cell will grow or remain in a quiescent state (8–10), and it has been proposed that in a variety of mammalian cell types, a set of metabolically unrelated biochemical reactions respond coordinately to changes in the environment (11, 12).
