Zusammenfassung
Die früher besprochene geringe Abhängigkeit der Periodenlängen von der Temperatur hat oft zu Spekulationen geführt, nach denen Diffusionsvorgänge entscheidend am „Uhrwerk“ beteiligt sein sollen, oder auch zur Annahme, es bestehe ein besonderer Regulationsmechanismus, der den unvermeidlichen Temperatureinfluß wieder kompensiert. Aus unseren früheren Darlegungen (Abschnitte 5 und 7) ergibt sich, daß diese Ansätze von der jetzt als falsch erwiesenen Annahme ausgingen, Änderungen der Periodenlängen seien Ausdruck geänderter Geschwindigkeit von Vorgängen, d. h. man verglich die physiologische Uhr mit unseren geläufigen Uhren, bei denen wir ohne weiteres aus der zur Wiederkehr gleicher „Phasen“ erforderlichen Zeit schließen können, ob die Uhr zu schnell oder zu langsam läuft. Bei der circadianen Rhythmik aber ist die Periodenlänge auch Ausdruck des Andauerns von energetisch zudem qualitativ verschiedenen Vorgängen.
