Platelet Aggregation in the Pathogenesis of Cerebrovascular Disorders

Abstract

The main physiologic function of platelets is to protect blood vessels from injury. This might either be minor damage of the endothelium, as in an early stage of atherosclerosis, which is covered by a layer of platelets, or a disruption, where platelets adhere to the severed vessel wall and to each other to form a plug thus stopping bleeding from a cut vessel.
