Abstract

Atlantoaxial subluxation occurs much more frequently in rheumatoid arthritis than in ankylosing spondylarthritis. However, the first case of upper cervical spine involvement in chronic inflammatory rheumatisms, which was reported in 1933 by Stammers and Frazer [333], concerned ankylosing spondylarthritis. Only much later—in 1951—was a similar involvement described in a case of rheumatoid polyarthritis [89].
