Abstract
Pathological rarefaction of bone in rheumatoid arthritis is not specific for the cervico-occipital joint, since it may involve the whole spine. However, diminution in bone density at this level makes radiodiagnosis particularly difficult. On plain X-rays and even more on tomograms, the outlines of the bones and especially of the odontoid process are hardly visible (Fig. 27). Hypertranslucency of the bones may be so marked as to resemble lysis.
