Hormonal Controls of Abscission: Biochemical and Ultrastructural Aspects

Plant Growth Regulation

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

Abscission is controlled by auxin (the pricipal natural retardant), and by abscisic acid and ethylene (the principal natural accelerants). The hormones gibberellin and cytokinin also influence abscission, but in secondary ways. Anatomically, abscission includes the development and activity of a separation layer and one or more protective layers. Cells of the separation layer secrete hydrolytic enzymes that degrade the cell wall, especially the pectic substances of the middle lamella. Present evidence suggests that these enzymes are moved via an endoplasmic reticulum-dictyosome-vesicle carrier system to the plasmalemma and released into the paramural region.
