Hormonal Regulation of Phototropism in Dicotyledonous Seedlings

Abstract

The validity of the Cholodny-Went theory of phototropism is assessed, particularly its applicability to dicotyledonous seedlings. Spectrofluorometric analysis of extracts shows that during phototropic curvature of hypocotyls of light-grown sunflower seedlings no lateral redistribution of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) occurs. No basipetal IAA translocation can be found either, but diffusates from hypocotyl bases contain unknown substances promoting and inhibiting cell elongation in the straight-growth test of Avena coleoptile segments.

Also because phototropic curvature of the hypocotyl requires the presence of illuminated cotyledons, and illuminated cotyledons inhibit cell extension in the hypocotyl, it is hypothesized that phototropic curvature in dicotyledonous seedlings is a matter of growth inhibition rather than caused by a growth-promoting substance.
