Some Aspects of Gibberellin Metabolism in Higher Plants

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

Selected aspects of gibberellin (GA) metabolism in higher plants are reviewed. Technical problems of identifying endogenous GAs, and metabolites from radioactive precursors, are discussed. The use of [2H]-labelling in conjunction with mass spectrometry is suggested as a method of identifying metabolites from applied GAs in the presence of the endogenous compound, and the preparation of some 1,3-[xH]-GAs from GA3 and GA4/GA7 is described. Some recent results on the ring contraction step, and on the conversion of C20- to C19-GAs, in GA biosynthesis are presented. Loss of biological activity (deactivation) of C19-GAs by 2β-hydroxylation is described.
