Abstract
The root cap of maize produces or releases growth-inhibiting substances (one of which could be abscisic acid). Removing the cap increased the root growth velocity, but only for the first hours after decapping. These growth inhibitors are not species specific; they move basipetally and also, in the apex only, laterally. Their concentration increases in the lower part of the geostimulated root segments. This is not only due to the downward transport of the inhibitors inside the apex, but also to the production of these growth regulators, which was found to be greater in the lower half of the cap from a horizontally placed root. The redistribution of the growth-inhibiting substances may simply explain the difference in elongation of the upper and lower sides of geostimulated roots. Experiments made by using exogenous in-dole-3-acetic acid and abscisic acid (both detected inside the root tip when using the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique) and fusicoccin, clearly indicated that the root growth and the georeaction of the root are controlled by at least two opposite flows of endogenous regulators. The first is a basipetal transport of ABA and other growth inhibitors, and the second corresponds to an acropetal movement of auxin.
