Interactions in Translocation of Growth Regulators in Shoots with Special Reference to Auxin Transport as Affected by Two Inhibitors, a Morphactin and Lycoricidinol

Abstract

Observations on auxin transport as affected by different factors are reviewed briefly. So far there seems to be no definite evidence that interactions in auxin transport result from a competition between transport-affecting compounds and auxin transport sites. There are, however, reports to show that inhibition of auxin transport is linked to an increase in immobilization or degradation of auxin and vice versa. Hence, the control of auxin transport by any factor may involve an alteration in the availability of auxin molecules by affecting systems other than the auxin transport system itself. This assumption is supported by presenting the results of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) transport experiments in the presence of two transport inhibitors, the morphactin 2-monochloro-9-hydroxyfluorene-9-carboxylic acid methylester (CFMe) and lycoricidinol, a substance occurring naturally in Lycoris and Narcissus (cf.12). It is shown that similar effects on auxin transport are brought about by different mechanisms.
