The Molecular Structure of the Primary Cell Wall and Elongation Growth

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

A previously proposed molecular model for primary cell walls is briefly described, and more recent evidence that supports the model is presented. Evidence is also presented that supports the hypothesis that the primary cell walls of all dicotyledonous plants, and probably, too, the walls of all monocotyledonous plants, are constructed on the same architectural plans using the same or functionally similar polysaccharides. The results of recent experiments designed to detect chemical changes in the wall during elongation growth are summarized. We have concluded that cellular elongation results from and depends on the insertion into the wall of newly synthesized polymers.
