Structure and Molecular Biology of Rabies Virus

Abstract

During the past fifteen years methods have become available to adapt rabies virus to cell culture systems, to produce the virus in large quantities and to purify it to a high degree. Since the last comprehensive reviews on this virus by Matsumoto (1970) and on rhabdoviruses by Howatson (1970), new data on the structure, chemistry and antigenicity of this virus have been obtained. By now a relative clear and detailed picture has emerged as far as morphology and serology of the virus is concerned. Little is known about the processes of viral replication and its interference with the metabolism of the host cell.
