Abstract
The first purpose here is to provide an inventory of important Late Paleozoic (DevonianPermian) taxa that either belong to, or are believed to belong to, the marine calcareous Rhodophyta. This is followed by an examination of possible evolutionary patterns and their distribution in time and space. Secondly, this review discusses sedimentological and diagenetic aspects of Late Paleozoic calcareous algae in the interpretation of carbonate facies.
