Taxonomy and Phylogeny of Fungi

  • Emil Müller
Part of the Progress in Botany / Fortschritte der Botanik book series (BOTANY, volume 38)

Abstract

One of a series of articles on “25 years of botany” concerns mycology (SPARROW, 1). According to the author the outstanding contributions to mycology within the period from 1947 to 1972 were the cultivation of rust fungi in axenic culture, the new facts on ultrastructure and on sexuality, especially on parasexuality of fungi without sexual state, the new arrangement of hymenomycetes, the progress in marine mycology (GAERTNER et al.; GARETH-JONES; HUGHES) and the publications of many useful books which support mycological activity. SPARROW’s list may be criticized for the many different approaches to the general problems, but the progress in handling and application of axenic cultures for all fungal groups, the information on ultrastructure (COLE and BEHNKE) and the better understanding of sexuality have contributed much to the present state of taxonomy and phylogeny. These fields are further covered by progress in fungal chemistry such as cell wall composition (Fortschr. Botan. 32, 243), biosynthesis of amino acids (Fortschr. Botan. 30, 240) and the possibility of comparison of proteins of different fungal organism (STOUT and SHAW; SNIDER and KRAMER; SEKHON et al.; BUCHER) and of fungal pigments (EUGSTER).
