Abstract
P-700 was discovered by Kok (1957) following Duysens’ (1952) observation of a similar pigment in photosynthetic bacteria. Both pigments absorbed on the long wavelength side of the main red chlorophyll band, a suitable position to accept transfer of excitation energy from the bulk pigments and thereby capture energy collected over a wide range of wavelengths. Both pigments represented only a small fraction of the total absorber concentration (the ratio of P-700 to total chlorophyll is about 1:400) and were bleached during illumination. This bleaching was shown to be a result of oxidation, the pigments being relatively strong oxidants (midpoint potentials of +400 to 500 mV).
