Abstract

In an earlier chapter (this vol. IV.1) Mühlethaler has discussed in detail the ultrastructural characteristics of the higher plant chloroplast membranes, as studied by several techniques. In this chapter the relation between structure and function has been considered. In the first section we shall consider the overall distribution of the photosystems in the lamellar structure, and examine in brief the support and apparent contradictions for the Park and Sane (1971) model. In the next section, the reactivity in the partition and nonpartition regions of the membrane is considered. There we shall consider the pertinent data for localizing the two most important enzymes, associated with the photosynthetic electron transport chain viz. the NADP+ reductase and ATPase. The role of grana in a higher plant chloroplast will then be discussed in view of the distribution of photosystem I and photosystem II, as well as NADP+ reductase and ATPase in the lamellar structure of chloroplasts.
