Delayed Luminescence

  • Chapter
Photosynthesis I

Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((PLANT,volume 5))

Abstract

Photosynthetic organisms are able to emit light for some time after an exposure to illumination. This delayed luminescence (d.l.) is to be distinguished from prompt fluorescence which is emitted during illumination and decays almost instantaneously, when the exciting light is extinguished. Delayed luminescence is a general phenomenon manifested by all intact photosynthetic systems investigated so far: microorganisms, leaves of higher plants, photosynthetic bacteria and active preparates such as chloroplasts and chromatophores. According to its spectrum d.l. originates from chlorophyll a (bacteriochlorophyll a in purple bacteria).
