Abstract

The discovery of photophosphorylation, starting with the major insights of van Niel (1941,1949), through the first biochemical discoveries with isolated chloroplasts (Hill, 1937), indications of phosphorylation in whole cell photosynthesis and then the discovery of ATP synthesis by isolated chloroplasts (Arnon et al., 1954) and by bacterial chromatophores (Frenkel, 1954) is described in Chapter I of this volume. The latter discoveries led to the direct measurement of simultaneous, coupled electron transport and ATP synthesis in the cell-free milieu (Arnon et al., 1958, 1959; Avron et al., 1958).
