Abstract
The marmoset colony is maintained in the Teratology Laboratories of the Royal College of Surgeons of England by Professor D. E. Poswillo. The colony was started in 1970 with the introduction of 30 pairs of animals and has been self-perpetuating since its inception. At the time of this study there were approximately 150 animals kept in an indoor breeding unit which consisted of two holding rooms containing thirty-eight cage units. A detailed description of a holding room and the cage design was given by Poswillo and Richards (1972) and of general colony management by Grist (1976). Initially, a semi-natural diet was offered but the marmosets are now fed on a commercially prepared expanded pellet diet (Mazuri-Primate Diet-B.P.
