The Diagnosis of Intracranial Metastases: The Efficiency of CT and Scintigraphy in Patients Investigated by both Methods

  • Chapter
Cranial Computerized Tomography

Abstract

The present chemotherapy of primary and secondary brain tumors has shown in most patients disappointing results so that the only chance for patients with cerebral metastases to mitigate their troubles and possibly prolong their survival period is operation and/or radio therapy. A surgical intervention, however, is ingenous in solitary non radio sensitive and/or superficial brain metastases when the general condition is favorable. Therefore the exact localization and size of the tumor has the same importance as the proof of solitary or multiple foci for the decision made by the surge on or the radio therapist. In this regard, the neuroradiologie and other diagnostic method still now have not been satisfactory (ECK etal.,1965; HÜNIG, 1972; PLANIOL, 1966; SELLWOOD, 1972; SIEGENTHALER, 1971; ZÜLCH, 1958). The basic change was only attained by CT (ELKE etal., 1976; HÜNIG etal., 1976; KAZNER etal., 1975; MÜLLER etal., 974; NEW etal., 1975; SMITH etal., 1972).
