Suprasellar Tumors in the CT Scan

  • Chapter
Cranial Computerized Tomography

Abstract

In a series of 1043 intracranial tumors studied with computer tomography, 170 neoplasms were located in the suprasellar region. Visual disturbances, as the leading localizing sign, were observed in 158 (94%) patients. Usually the radiologic diagnosis of parasellar and lateral extension of tumors was based on alterations in carotid angiography, while supra and retrosellar growth mainly was recognized by displace-ment of the chiasmatic cistern and the third ventricle in the pneumo-tomoencephalogram (FAHLBUSCH,1972,1973). Since computerized trans-axial tomography was introduced by HOUNSFIELD and AMBROSE in 1973 diagnosis of these tumors too has been simplified (STEINHOFFetal., 1975; KAZNER etal., 1975).
