Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

H. Müller (1851) first described horizontal cells in the teleost retina; Cajal (1893) gave them the commonly used name of horizontal cells. Between the time of Müller’s initial description and Cajal’s study, these cells were given several names by different authors: “tangentialen fulcum Zellen” (W. Müller, 1874), “cellules basales” (Ranvier, 1882); “sternenförmige Zellen” (Dogiel, 1884); “konzentrische Stützzellen” (Schiefferdecker, 1886); “cellule superficiali” (Tartuferi, 1887).
