Abstract
For study of the local responses of pial vessels to transmural electrical stimulation, pial arteries and veins of 62 cats were examined (vessel diameter 80–250 μm). The animals were anaesthetized (Pentobarbital 25 mg/kg body weight) with spontaneous respiration. The acid-base status was determined from arterial blood and kept in a physiologic range by assisted respiration as needed. Mean arterial blood pressure remained constant during the experimentation. After opening of the skull (9), an area of 2·3 cm of the dura mater was carefully removed. The pial vessels were observed using a 40-fold magnification by means of an operating microscope equipped for photographic documentation. The diameters of the vessels were calculated from the photographs and their changes expressed in percent of the initial diameter (I.D.). Dilatations of the vessels’ were indicated by plus (+), constrictions by minus (-).
