Ion Transport and Energy Conservation in Chloroplasts

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((PLANT,volume 3))

Abstract

Photosynthetic phosphorylation, the light-driven synthesis of ATP from ADP and Pi, in chloroplasts was discovered over twenty years ago by Arnon et al. (1954). Within a few years, it was firmly established that photosynthetic phosphorylation (photophosphorylation in short) is coupled to light-dependent electron flow through an electron transport chain rather similar to that in mitochondria (Jagendorf, 1958; Arnon, 1958). However, the realization that ion fluxes might have something to do with photophosphorylation is only a decade old.
