Abstract

In 1953, Medawar and his collaborators (Billingham et al., 1953) succeeded in inducing experimentally transplantation tolerance in mice and chickens. In-traembryonic injections of allogeneic cells produced in the recipients permanent or at least prolonged survival of skin grafts of the same genotype as that of the intraembryonically injected cells. Independently, Hašek (1953 b, 1956) at the same time induced tolerance to alloantigens in chickens. He described a technique for producing embryonic parabiosis in birds (Hašek, 1953 a; Hraba, 1968) by the connection of chorioallantoic blood vessels. This parabiosis ended naturally at hatching. He observed that chickens joined during embryonic life lost the ability to form antibodies to the erythrocytes of their partner.
