Ceramic Hip Joint Replacement — Experimental Results and Early Clinical Experience

Abstract

Alumina oxide ceramic was proposed by several investigators as a candidate biomaterial for joint replacement based upon morphologic studies with small implants in bone and soft tissue of different animals (1,4–9,15,17,21). In addition, tribologic studies showed this material to have excellent gliding properties with only minimal wear rates (2,12–14,22).
