Regulation of Nucleic Acid Synthesis by Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids

  • Chapter
Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids

Abstract

The pioneer studies of Brachet (1947, 1950) and Casperson (1950) demonstrated a correlation between RNA and accelerated growth of tissues. Subsequent studies (cf. Zamecnik, 1960; Watson, 1963) demonstrated that protein biosynthesis required at least three different types of RNA: (1) transfer (t-RNA); (2) messenger (m-RNA); and (3) ribosomal (r-RNA). Since androgens stimulated protein synthesis in the various target tissues, it seemed reasonable to expect changes in the concentration of one or more of the pertinent RNAs. Among the many tissues other than the accessory sex organs, the mouse kidney has undergone the most intensive study (Kochakian, 1962, 1965, 1967a, b, 1969a, b, 1971).
