Abstract
Of the addictive drugs, alcohol more than any other, affects the population of Germany. This study is devoted to the prevention and control of addiction as a disease of the body and spirit: not only must death from alcoholic poisoning be prevented, but the initial addiction itself must also be treated.
The problem is not only described from the standpoint of the first aid ambulance crew, the police, forensic medicine, and resuscitation, but also from the viewpoint of differential diagnosis, internal medicine, psychiatry, psychotherapy, and neurosurgery. Finally, accounts of experiences gained from the establishment and organization of an Emergency Alcoholic Poisoning Treatment Center in Mainz are given.
