Abstract

At the onset of culture the ultrastructural appearance of the pig thyroid cells is the same as that of cells isolated from the thyroids of Man (Shimazaki et al., 1967), Sheep (Neve et al., 1968; Tixier-Vidal et al., 1969), Chick (Hilfer & Hilfer, 1966). The cell pellet contains many totally isolated elements but also follicle fragments comprising 2–10 epithelial cells always interjoined at their apical pole. It also contains cell debris resulting from trypsinization, a few red cells and some connective elements such as mastocytes, macrophages and lymphocytes.
