The Natural History of Idiopathic Diabetes Mellitus. Heterogeneity of Insulin Responses in Latent Diabetes

  • Chapter
The Genetics of Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

Idiopathic diabetes mellitus is a disorder of metabolism which in its fully developed clinical expression is characterized by fasting hyperglycemia, atherosclerotic and microangiopathic vascular disease, and neuropathy. Diabetes may present clinically also in a mild or asymptomatic form with relatively mild carbohydrate intolerance, and with normal fasting blood glucose levels.
