Antihypertensive Effect of Diuretics

  • Chapter
Antihypertensive Agents

Abstract

Since the introduction of the long acting benzothiadiazine diuretics by Novello and Sprague in 1957 and the demonstration of their blood pressure lowering actions (Hollander and Wilkins, 1957; Freis et al., 1958), a vast literature has developed attesting to this effect, though considerable controversy has surrounded the mode of action. The fall in blood pressure, however, is quite modest, approximately 20/12 mmHg in the recumbent and standing positions.
