Alcoholic Hyperlipemia

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbuch der inneren Medizin ((INNEREN 7,volume 7 / 4))

Abstract

The occurrence of hyperlipemia following episodes of alcohol intoxication was first reported by Feigl in 1918. Twenty-four years later, occasional lactescence of the serum in patients with alcoholic fatty liver was alluded to by Keefer and Fries (1942). In 1957, Albrink and Klatskin described the association of serum lactescence with pancreatitis in chronic alcoholics following a bout of excessive drinking. One year later, Zieve (1958) reported the association of alcoholic hyperlipemia with hemolytic anemia in patients with alcoholic fatty liver or cirrhosis. Milder degrees of hyperlipemia were found by Cachera et al. (1950) to be rather common in alcoholic subjects with hepatic steatosis, but less so in patients with a well established cirrhosis.
