Spider Populations in a Subalpine Birch Forest

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Ecological Studies ((ECOLSTUD,volume 17))

Abstract

Spiders (Araneae) are an important predator group in most terrestrial ecosystems. The great number of spiders in IBP sites at Kevo has earlier been shown to exist both in the ground (Koponen, 1971) and in vegetation layers (Koponen and OJala, 1974). The spiders inhabiting the ground layer, especially the family Lycosidae, constitute a large proportion of the surface-active mesofauna in many habitats, especially when the pitfall-trapping method is used. The aim of the present paper is to deal with the spiders of the ground layer of a simple habitat in subarctic conditions, with special attention in Lycosidae populations.
