Abstract

Lately, a number of comprehensive books covering wide areas have been published. The vegetation of Southeastern Europe is treated in much detail by HORVAT et al. The work on this impressive volume was started in the fifties by the late first author. The vegetation of Eastern Europe and of Northern and Central Asia is reviewed by WALTER (1). WALTER’s (2) book on tropical and subtropical vegetation has been issued in a revised edition. NUMATA et al. characterize the vegetation of Japan, KALLIOLA the plant cover of Finland. ELLENBERG and KLÖTZLI published their work on the forest communities of Switzerland; this work was begun in the early sixties and is based on more than 5000 relevés. F.-K. HARTMANN’s studies on Central European forests are concentrated in a condensed, well-illustrated form. The textbook of Mueller-Dombois and Ellenberg evaluates in a most profound way the methods and aims of vegetation studies. KELLMAN presents a short, elementary text-book. In a new volume of the Handbook of Vegetation Science, foundations of interrelations between vegetation and environment are treated (STRAIN). Duffey et al. and RABOTNOV deal with meadows and pastures on a vegetational basis, whereas ERNST reviews the heavy metal vegetation of various continents.
