Abstract

The progress made in the field of mitochondrial inheritance has been presented by DUJON and MICHAELIS in Fortschr. Botan. 36. It seems suitable, therefore, to dedicate this paper to plastid genetics. However, in order to present a general view, a sharp separation is not possible, and the results of research in mitochondria genetics cannot be entirely ignored. A briefer consideration of the mitochondria seems justified because two books have appeared within the period under review: The Biogenesis of Mitochondria (KROON and SACCONE) and the Structure of Mitochondria (MUNN). Articles have appeared recently on extrakaryotic inheritance (WILKIE), plastid inheritance with particular reference to results with higher plants (WILD and SCHWAHN), mitochondrial DNA (MAHLER), kinetoplast DNA (SIMPSON), plastid and mitochondrial protein synthesis (ATTARDI et al.; ELLIS et al.; SCHATZ and MASON).
