Abstract

The last report on carbohydrate metabolism in this series was given in 1972 (Fortschr. Botan. 34, 139) in which the metabolism of branched chain sugars, sucrose and chitin was reviewed in some detail. The following contribution will concentrate on the progress of knowledge about monosaccharide, oligosaccharide and starch metabolism. In addition, the reader is recommended to some recently published reviews on other topics of carbohydrate metabolism: Plant Polyols by STACEY, essays by ALBERSHEIM, NORTHCOTE, VILLEMEZ and KAUSS on plant cell-wall polysaccharides, a review of the biosynthesis of algal polysaccharides by HAUG and LARSEN, and discussions of chemical and biochemical aspects of fungal cell-walls (STURGEON) and of glycoproteins of higher plants (SHARON).
