Abstract
From an analysis point of view an image can be considered as a two-dimensional area of picture elements (pixels), each of which is characterized by a gray level. In other words, an image is a brightness function f(x,y) of two space variables x and y. The gray levels are assumed to represent the radiant energy of some electromagnetic spectral range. But they could also be a measure of some other features, such as distance, velocity or polarization etc.
