Abstract
§ 1. Eisenstein’s major themes, properly modulated, lend themselves to a large number of interesting variations; as we indicated earlier (Chap. I; cf. Chap. II, § 5), much of Kronecker’s best work consists of such variations, although Kronecker could of course not refrain from adding some themes of his own to Eisenstein’s; this will be discussed in Chap. VII and VIII. In this chapter and the next one, we will stay closer to Eisenstein; as an example of the scope of his ideas, we will include a proof for a valuable result, due to R. M. Damerell6, which in turn has supplied a starting point for some recent investigations of Yu. Manin and S. Vishik7.
