Transport in Plants I

Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((PLANT,volume 1))

Abstract

This contribution surveys the available data on catalytic abilities and biochemical reactions of phloem constituents. Since data from lower vascular plants are scarce, mainly the phloem of angiosperms will be considered. This tissue is composed of 3 to 4 types of living cells. Phloem parenchyma, sometimes transfer cells, and companion cells are nucleate members of the phloem. They are equipped with organelles and cytoplasmic structures commonly found in parenchymatic cells, although certain signs of specialization can be recognized. It can be assumed that these cells do not differ in metabolism from other parenchymatous elements.
