Abstract
The vascular tissue of most woody stems functions for a limited time only. In most species the sieve tubes of the phloem are active in assimilate transport for only one growing season. The xylem also functions for a limited time. In ring-porous trees water conduction takes place primarily in the youngest growth ring; most vessels of older growth rings are embolized and in some species, such as Robinia pseudoacacia L., filled with tyloses. On the other hand, phloem and xylem parenchyma cells, which function as storage tissue, remain alive and functional for many years. Most of these cells are therefore not in direct contact with functional sieve elements and vessels. The ray parenchyma cells have evolved to transport nutrients and water radially between phloem and xylem. The histological construction of rays differs greatly within gymnosperms and dicotyledonous stems and is characteristic for various taxonomic groups.
