Phloem Loading

  • Chapter
Transport in Plants I

Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((PLANT,volume 1))

Abstract

In this article the term “phloem loading” is applied to the process by which the major translocated substances are selectively and actively delivered to the sieve tubes in the source region prior to translocation. Thus, substances which undergo phloem loading can be accumulated in the phloem cells to a level above their concentration outside the sieve tubes. Substances considered to undergo phloem loading include one or more major translocate sugars and perhaps some inorganic ions and certain amino acids. Phloem loading as used here does not necessarily imply that the process is the driving mechanism powering translocation although this seems likely.
