Electroosmotic Flow

Transport in Plants I

Part of the book series: Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((PLANT,volume 1))

Abstract

A theory of sieve-tube mechanism based on the phenomenon of electroosmosis was first put forward by D.S. Fensom in 1957. This suggested the diffusion of H+ ions as the cause of the emf’s required. The following year the present author (Spanner, 1958) put forward a theory based on the K+ ion and taking into account the newer knowledge of sieve-plate structure then becoming available. With modifications this theory is still current, and it is the one which will be discussed in the present chapter.
