Abstract

Multiple sclerosis was first described by CRUVEILHIER in 1835 (5) and the anatomicophathological picture was first given by CARSWELL in 1838 (4). It was FRERICHS (7), who diagnosed multiple sclerosis clinically for the first time in 1849 and CHARCOT published an extensive clinical review in 1868. In the second half of the 19th century the disease aroused such an interest that E. MÜLLER (19) was able to collect over 1000 literature references in his monograph, which appeared in 1904.
